After last week's Wimbledon triumph, there's naught to do but applaud Serena Williams' astounding resurgence and another glorious addition to her already astonishing list of accomplishments. The applause however, is being tainted in some sections by some snide remarks and unflattering critiques about her physique.
Body image is an intensely personal matter, irrespective of your celebrity or success
First and foremost, it's an embarrassment that such ridiculous and unsubtle body-shaming is considered newsworthy by media entities, when such things are of such a personal nature. Being in the public eye for most of your professional life is hard enough to deal with without needless invasions into such matters. And some of the comments directed at her have been quite disturbing, with racist and misogynist connotations.
Williams' build and athleticism is a tremendous asset to her talent
The intensity and power of Serena William's gameplay are what enable her to comeback from tight spots in matches, and her athleticism is what gives her an edge over others in these situations. Female tennis stars have commented on their perpetual dilemma in choosing between building greater strength and maintaining a body image they consider appropriate. Athletes looking to succeed and prolong their careers should be devoted to their sport over all else.
Williams' focus on improving and maintaining her athleticism and strength over the years is the reason she's had such a storied career and won countless trophies. And all this whilst showing great confidence in her appearance.
