Serena Williams Soldiers On

Serena Williams Soldiers On

After almost 15 years Serena Williams has returned to BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells. William beat Zarina Diyas, Sloane Stephens, and Timea Bacsinszky in the quarterfinals, but she remains critical of herself. “Well, you know me,” Williams stated in an interview with ESPN. “I can’t name anything I’m pleased with today.”

Williams is now preparing to take on Simona Halep, the Romanian who was ranked No. 3 in the world at the end of the 2014 season. Halep has only beat Williams once, though it was a substantial win, coming out on top 6-0, 6-2. In their combined matches Williams is up 4-1 against Halep. Williams recognized Halep’s strength as a player. “I expect her to be playing an incredible game,” Williams said. “I’m ready for her to be the great player that she is capable of being.”

Williams has remained modest about her place in the tournament, stating that she is only happy to be playing. But a win against Halep will bring her closer to an unprecedented record. Williams is now only two wins away from becoming the first woman to win three titles at Indian Wells. If she takes the tournament she will also be the first American to do so since 2001, when she herself took the title. Though Williams remains humble. “I’m just happy to still be here playing in front of you guys,” Williams said. “I can’t believe I’m still here.”
