2016 Summer Olympics

The 2016 Summer Olympics games are known as the Games of the XXXI Olympiad. They will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and they will last from August 5, 2016 to August 21, 2016. The motto for these games is ‘’Live your passion’’ or on Portuguese ‘’Viva sua paixão’’. Already 62 nations are qualified and they are expecting more! These athletes will compete in 28 sports and in 306 events. The bidding process started on May 16, 2007. And, the first step was submitting an initial application to the IOC (International Olympic Committee). They had to answer on 25-questions, so they application could be accepted. Rio de Janeiro won the bid with 66 votes, beating Madrid, Spain.

There are a few concerns with the Olympic Games. The crime rate is very high in Brazil, recently a police helicopter was shot down. So many athletes are being afraid for their safety. Although the mayor of the Rio de Janeiro announced that all participants will be protected, we must wait and see the results! Another concern are problems with preparation. The London Evening Standard reported that these are the worse preparations in history. Both, infrastructure and construction are behind schedule! As a solution, IOC sends a special task force who should speed up the preparations.

The price of the tickets was announced on September 16, 2014. It will be from R$40 for ordinary events, to R$4.600 for the opening ceremony. Total count of tickets that should be sold is 7.5 million, 200.000 less than in the 2012 Summer Olympics. The torch will pass through 250 cities before it is settled in the Rio de Janeiro.
