Beijing Determined to Get 2022 Olympics, Plans to Spend Billions of Dollars on Tackling Smog

Beijing, a serious applicant for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games, has decided to tackle the city's huge problem with smog and air pollution. The city authorities are planing to spend USD 7.6 billion in an effort to make the metropolis air cleaner and fit for the Olympics.

Although Beijing already tried to ease the problem of smog ahead of the 2008 Summer Olympic Games, the city still suffers from the problem with average level of toxic airborne particles at 85.9 micrograms per cubic meter last year. It is down four percent compared with 2013, but still far away from the national standard, which is 35 micrograms per cubic meter. Beijing plans to decrease the level to 60 micrograms by 2017.

“I think this is a fact — Beijing’s air at the moment has a problem. We all know it. This is a problem that we have great determination to resolve,” Wang Hui, spokeswoman for the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games Bid Committee, said at a press conference. “The measures we have taken are the toughest,” she added.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is scheduled to visit China next week. It has been known that Beijing tends to order emergency factory shutdowns ahead of similar events. It remains to be seen how will the city persuade the Committee that it is better at hosting the Olympics than the only remaining other competitor, Almaty in Kazakhstan.
